Lifelong Learning

The Merrick Jewish Centre aspires to be a learning center, a place where Jews can begin their education at a young age and look forward to a lifetime of learning. We hope you will become an active participant in our activities. Programs are made available to both members and non-members and serve to provide a sense of community.

The adult education program at MJC is referred to as Lifelong Learning (LLL). Our name reflects our commitment to continue to grow and challenge the mind and heart. Opportunities are provided for adults to continue to develop knowledge and skills in both the Judaic and secular worlds.

Jewish Knowledge and Skills - Classes are taught regularly in Hebrew reading, Jewish ethics, holiday and festival observance and prayer.  Rabbi Klein and Rabbi Dermer offer classes on topics that they think will engage our congregants.   In addition, other rabbis and lecturers are invited to lead either individual or a series of workshops on a variety of subjects that are stimulating, informative and entertaining. We also plan commemorative events for Kristallnacht and Yom Hashoah.

Secular Learning - When congregants identify a topic of interest, the Lifelong Learning Committee attempts to organize informal learning.  To date, we have provided programs that have included

  • teaching computer skills to enable better use of technology

  • weekly Mah Jongg and Rummikub afternoons

  • Bridge lessons

  • MJC Reads!  is a program that asked all members of the congregation to read the same book and culminated in book discussions and a forum

  • weekly craft club for knitting and crocheting

  • informative lectures on the world of movie entertainment

  • opportunities to experience Yiddish Theater and plays of Jewish interest

Lifelong learning is a basic Jewish concept. There is always more to learn and opportunities to grow and stimulate thinking. We encourage our members to challenge themselves throughout their lifetime and make new friends in the process.  You are welcome to join our committee and add your insight and expertise.
