About Us

OUR MISSION

The Merrick Jewish Centre is deeply committed to enriching each congregant’s personal Jewish journey through the religious, educational, and social opportunities provided by our egalitarian, inclusive and welcoming Jewish community.

Inclusivity

Each person is created b'Tzelem Elohim--in the image of God. All who participate in our community are celebrated as sacred.

Our synagogue and Inclusion Committee are squarely focused on welcoming all who seek to deepen their connection with Jewish tradition and practice. This can only happen in a supportive and dynamic environment, and where a community is built on respecting and valuing each person, so all Jews can thrive.

We welcome people of all races, ethnicities, socioeconomic status, political views, religious backgrounds, national origin, abilities, ages, sexual orientations, and gender identities and expressions. It strengthens and enriches us all.

The Merrick Jewish Centre and our Inclusion Committee welcome your thoughts and feedback on our ongoing dedication to these goals.

About Us

Tradition takes on deep meaning at the Merrick Jewish Centre-Congregation Ohr Torah. We opened our doors in 1929, which makes the MJC the oldest synagogue in Bellmore and Merrick.

Since then, we’ve taken to heart our commitment to egalitarian Judaism. Widening opportunities for participation at all levels of Jewish life enhances our worship, our observance and our community.

Another key to our longevity has been engaging our children, starting from the time they’re born. The Merrick Jewish Centre Hebrew School offers innovative programming and experiences for children and families that enable them to discover the joy and pride that comes with building strong Jewish bonds. Our high school students enjoy programming and transformational growth at Jewish summer camps. Even when our MJC teens head to college, we offer the Jewish connections they need to thrive.

We’re also enriched by our longtime ties to other area synagogues and local houses of worship. Community-wide Tashlich services, concerts, menorah lightings and gatherings in support of Israel are just some of the hallmark events that bring us together and enrich Bellmore and Merrick.
