MEMBERSHIP

The Merrick Jewish Centre doesn’t simply offer membership, but belonging, as we balance spirituality, support and inspiration with worship, education and tradition.

We offer educational opportunities, joyous programs and meaningful connections for congregants of every age. Our members, clergy, and professional staff are committed to building a community in which we make and pass on Jewish knowledge and memories to each subsequent generation.

Please contact our membership committee to find out about reduced fees for first-year members.

Complete the MJC Membership Application.

Legacy Membership
The Merrick Jewish Centre community is fortunate that many of those who’ve grown up in our congregation have returned to the area with their own families to make the MJC their Jewish home.

We invite those families to join our Legacy Membership program, which offers a complimentary, two-year membership. To be eligible for this special program, at least one head of household must have grown up in our congregation and currently be living within our community, and children in the family may be first-graders or younger.

Please reach out to us at membership@merrickjc.org or call the MJC office at 516-379-8650.

A DIVERSE COMMUNITY

At Merrick Jewish Centre we embrace interfaith families and individuals of any age, race, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or financial ability.

Interfaith Families at Merrick Jewish Centre
Your family is always welcome at Merrick Jewish Centre. Our congregational family is enriched by diversity.

As a synagogue affiliated with the Conservative movement we invite interfaith families to make us your spiritual home. Our rabbi, staff, and lay leadership want you to experience community that supports your family.  We offer couples and interfaith families the support and resources to create Jewish homes and to practice and grow in Judaism.

What You Should Know About Interfaith Families at Merrick Jewish Centre
We have engaged and committed interfaith families among our members and welcome their participation in services or life cycle events. MJC supports and engages interfaith families and welcomes the non-Jewish partner to participate in Jewish life to the extent of their personal comfort.

A Complete Experience for All at Merrick Jewish Centre
Whether you’re celebrating a birth with a brit milah (ritual circumcision) or a naming ceremony, a bar or bat mitzvah, wedding or any other joyous occasion, we want to share your milestone. Family members who are not Jewish can participate in these ceremonies in meaningful ways, and Rabbi Dorsch is happy to discuss those options. And, of course, in times of need or loss, Rabbi Dorsch and our congregational family want to be of support and comfort to your entire family.

Jewish Education
One need not be Jewish to take advantage of the many educational opportunities offered by the synagogue. Everyone is welcome to participate in our Lifelong Learning programs and classes. If you are interested in enrolling your child in our Hebrew School, please contact Heléna Eilenberg, Education Director at (516) 378-8384 or principal@merrickjc.org.

Share Shabbat, Holidays and More with Us
Shabbat, holiday and weekday services are open to members of all faiths and we welcome you to join us anytime. If you are less familiar with the service, we would be happy to have a congregant sit with you during services. There are English translations and transliterations of many of the prayers in the prayer book. And our Rabbi or members will be happy to explain the service to you.

Let Us Get to Know You!
We welcome the opportunity to meet you for a cup of coffee and to learn more about your family - let's connect!

GIVING

Endowment Fund

The Endowment Fund of the Merrick Jewish Centre is dedicated to maintaining and improving the high quality of religious, educational and community services provided at our synagogue. Similar to endowments at colleges, museums, and other Jewish institutions, this endowment fund receives gifts and bequests that collectively generate annual income to support ongoing essential services and innovative new programs which benefit our congregation as a whole.

The Endowment Fund accepts two forms of gifts and bequests. First, there are contributions to the General Fund that support both current programs and the needs of our synagogue. Recently, Helen and Jesse Drogin (of blessed memory) provided us with a generous donation of this type. Second, there are special purpose contributions that are directed toward a specific project and are often made in honor of a loved one. For example, the Blanche Batnick Fund was created by Blaine and Joan Land in memory of Blaine's sister with the express purpose of supporting tzedakah projects taking place within our Hebrew school. Gifts of any amount are welcome, however in order to perpetuate a named fund a minimum gift or bequest of $10,000 is requested.

Another way to enlarge the Endowment Fund is by becoming a member of the Chai Society. To become a member of this group, an individual or family agrees to contribute $18 or a multiple of "Chai" ($36, $54, $72, $90) on a monthly basis. Most members grant permission to the synagogue office to charge a credit card a set amount each month. Other members pay a lump sum for the year. Since its inception, $45,000 has been added to the Endowment Fund through the efforts of our more than seventy generous Chai Society members. If you would like to join the Chai Society, please click on this link to be directed to the membership application which can be completed and returned to the office. Your name will then be added to our Membership List of Honor.

If you have any questions about the Endowment Fund, or would like to become a member of our committee, please contact endowment@merrickjc.org or the synagogue office.
