Passover, the Festival of Freedom, born of liberation from Egyptian bondage, is right around the corner. In the book of Exodus, 12:19, it says that for the duration of the holiday "no chametz can be found in your house." On Passover we meticulously try to remove all leaven, and avoid having any chametz in our possession, in preparation for the celebration of the holiday. We do our best to rid our homes of chametz, but for a variety of reasons, there may be some that we may not want to or be able to discard. That is why Jewish tradition encourages us to sell all the chametz that we do not discard, so that we no longer own any chametz over the course of the festival. In accordance with Jewish law, the Merrick Jewish Centre invites all of us to "hire" Rabbi Dorsch to act as your agent in selling your chametz for the duration of the holiday. You can do so by filling out the form below. This form must be received by Friday, April 11, 2025 at 9:00 am.
It is customary to include a small "fee," as a donation to the Rabbi Dorsch Discretionary Fund, so you can participate in the repurchase of your chametz at the end of the festival. Please make your donation below. Your request for the sale of chametz must be received by Friday, April 11, 2025 at 9:00 am. If you need assistance please call the synagogue office at 516-379-8650. Thank you very much. Wishing you and your family a Chag Pesach Sameach.
